Sport Education is not a pie in the sky idea that would not work in the typical school settings and for which one requires elaborate sports infra structure and sport facilities. The SE model was developed over several years by Daryl Siedentop working with open minded physical educators in several schools of central Ohio, USA. This model is not only appropriate for team and individual sport activities but also applicable for general exercise and dance activities.
Sports Education is now recognized throughout the worlds as a viable model for physical education from 3rd through 12th grade. SE is being taught to prospective physical education teachers as a viable approach to provide quality physical education to students.
Besides rules, regulations of various games and insight of Bio Mechanics the SE program focuses on the concepts of how to select sports activities, how to organize team, decide which student role to use, how to modify activities and playing conditions, how to design competition formats, building class management routines, a comprehensive behavior development system, concept of fair play and creating a festive environment for sports education and integrating sports in to main stream education.
The Sports Education (SE) is by no means a U-turn from Physical Education (PE) approach but an extension and refinement of the existing system. The research has shown that students with lower ability levels favored SE over PE and students who were non-participants in sports became actively involved in sports. The schools have even noticed that absenteeism and non participation fell under SE; it is more gender inclusive and ultimately, produces educated, well mannered, tolerant and receptive athletes which are imperative for modern day professional sports.
